xyzscumMy summary
So, quick backstory summary.
Zarc got famous, people started demanding more and more violent fights, the dragons and him got caught up in it and became more and more violent in their shows before finally snapping and deciding to destroy the world, military couldn't do shit, Rei tried to stop him and wound up splitting the world into four - and him and her along with it. Suddenly a bunch of people have babies they just don't question 'cause their minds have been fucked with, none of them realizing they never had a pregnancy or in Yuzu's dad's case, a lady.
All the girls are "born with bracelets on" that they never take off.
In all except Yuri's case, the bracelet person and their respective Yu became friends. Standard and Synchro's from childhood, Xyz's from when Shun pointed Ruri out to Yuto as teens and Yuto basically insta-crushed.

Six... I think, yeah, six years before the canon, Yuji's dad is challenged by Strong Ishijima but never turns up and is never seen again, having been teleported by an accident to the Xyz dimension, where he takes on a teaching job at the duel school Strong is outraged and ruins Yusho's reputation, claiming he's a coward. This stigma is pushed onto the kid and to his duel school which is taken over by his friend, the not-Yuzu's dad, making people scorn them.

Standard Arc quick summary (just using "Yuya" for the summary, since we dunno what you're keeping for Yuji):
Strong Ishijima, the LDS representative and unbeaten champion, decides to challenge Yuya as part of a big old show. Yuya feels obligated because he still believes in his dad and hates that Strong is parading his dad's "cowardice" and made people hate him. He uses his pendulum necklace to decide whether to go for it or not, since his dad told him it'd always guide him. He wants to prove a) he can be a good enterment duelist (entertainment dueling, Yusho's special term is enterment) and b) be good enough to make up for Yusho never having turned up for his fight, so he turns up dressed as a clown and fights him. Only partway through, as things go bad, he experiences a brief moment and three of his cards turn into pendulum cards, which he instinctively knows how to use. While Strong just goes "wtf wtf wtf" (seriously he's just yelling WHAT IS HAPPENING???? over and over), Yuya Pendulum summons and eventually wins the duel, but doesn't remember the magically appearing cards or even much of the duel at all after it.
A lot of kids are now fanboying Yuya. Sawatari tries to fake-friend him so he can steal his cards, puts his friends in a trap and makes him duel him, but the cards won't work for him and he winds up beaten.
Sora turns up seemingly out of the blue, claiming to idolize Yuya and wanting to be his apprentice. He stalks him until Yuya agrees to duel him for the privilege to be his student, Yuya nearly has a nervous breakdown over losing his ace monster because it's tied so heavily to his dad, but all ends well. Sora joins You Show as a student.
The LDS owner's wife Henrietta shows up claiming she's going to get them shut down if they don't beat her students. She forces them to fight three duels, best out of three wins. If they win, You Show is gone forever. Sora refuses to take part.
The first fight is won, but Yuzu loses hers, and Reiji suddenly turns up to take over for the third fight against Yuya, with pendulum cards he's outright made. However, they malfunction and he gets a call that something bad is happening (Shun), so he forfeits and tells them they can keep the school before leaving.
Yuya gets sponsored to take part in the Maiami Championship, run by LDS, but weird shit keeps happening. Sawatari tries to force Yuzu to duel him but Yuto defeats him to protect her, scorning him. Sawatari then feigns injury and his dad (the mayor) tries to sue Yuya since he thinks he's Yuto, but while chasing Yuya with some LDS guys to try to "arrest" him, Shun turns up. Yuya is knocked out, the LDS guys are turned into cards and the mayor panics and runs. Yuya wakes up confused and guesses he imagined it, not noticing the giant clawmarks in the bridge up above.
Meanwhile Yuzu wants to learn fusion to become stronger so Sora teaches her. They briefly run afoul of Yuto, and Yuzu notices that for the second time, Yuto vanished when Yuyz came near and also her bracelet glows whenever the two are around, huh, weird that.
The LDS kids who were meant to challenge them (the top Fusion, Synchro and Xyz students) decide to take on the missing LDS people case themselves after their favourite teacher goes missing and tries to go after Shun, but Yuto knocks Shun out while he's stunned by the sight of Yuzu and leaves with him. They're dumb enough to try again... and this time he almost manages to card them, but Reiji shows up to save their asses, with a buttload of armed men. He tells Shun sorry, dad won't care if you kidnap me, he already stuck a bomb to my arm once and threw me through a dimension portal, but I can help you get to him 'cause I hate him too, so Shun joins the Championship.
2/3rds of the way done with Standard, donworry, it gets short if you skip all the generic duels
Reiji brainwashes the LDS kids to think Shun's a classmate they like, Yuzu finds her confidence with fusion, Sora fights Shun and it goes badly, putting him in hospital, Yuto goes to confront him since he knows he's Academian just like Shun did, but Sora gets teleported back by a program on his duel disk after revealing his mission (a failsafe for spies). Academia reads his memories after finding him unconscious there.
Meanwhile Yugo shows up right after Sora leaves, and insists Yuto took something from him. The two fight, the dragons go crazy and the two go all glowy eyed and spooky, Yuya snaps them out of it too late because Yuto is done for and then holds him in his arms while the guy "dies" and is absorbed into him. Yugo being further away he doesn't even see any of this and is just confused and leaves.
Next duel in the tournament, Yuya is tortured by a duelist who's been taught that dueling is a Serious Business with no humor and has to involve Pain and Suffering and No Fun Ever. This guy has a personal hatred of him for being able to enjoy dueling so he makes it hell and pushes him with his traps until Yuya snaps, goes all glowy red eyed and silent, and crushes him with Dark Rebellion, to Shun's rage. Shun, thinking he killed Yuto and stole it, goes after him during the next (open field, go hunt down and defeat challengers in special terrain) challenge, but is convinced (eventually) that Yuto gave it to him. A bunch of jackasses try to hurt them by proxy (dueling near enough to them that they get hit by their monster attacks) but are interrupted by Academia's elite Obelisk Force, led by Sora. Obelisk Force take out the jackasses, Sora goes off to fight Shun (and break his ribs) and Yuya goes crazy cuckoo snarling rage nuts and takes out some of the Obelisk Force before being trapped under a fallen electrical pole.
Some of his friends realize he's possessed thanks to a psychic he knows but have no idea what to do about it.
Blah blah academia attack, blah blah lots of victims, Yuya fights Sora and tries to convince him not to fight but Sora freaks out when he's reminded of all the good times and withdraws. Yuri tries to kidnap Yuzu but after Yugo turns up, Yuzu's bracelet teleports her and Yugo away to Synchro. Reiji decides the survivors are good enough to become the Lancers and asks them to come with him to Synchro to try to gather help to fight because he doesn't think Yugo is actually evil like Shun says, Shun having assumed Synchro is on Academia's side due to the Yugo mistake. Yuya initially refuses, having broken down over Yuzu being missing, but Reiji bitchslaps him into coming along and his mom chases him with a motorcycle and scares him into committing to it. (his mom is scary hardcore for such an otherwise nice lady). Shun tries to refuse to help, especially after seeing Reira's coming along because he thinks Reiji isn't taking it seriously. However, he briefly sees Yuto when Yuya tries to convince him and is stunned into complying. And so off they go, Reiji, Reira, Yuya, Shun, Sawatari, Tsukikage and Gongenzaka, on Adventure!

Things we want to change but can't yet
Changes
- The Yus aren't explicitly identical (not that they ever were). What people recognize when they look at them is a sense of knowing this person, of it being the friend/son/whatever they know despite them not looking the same. Like seeing the soul rather than the body. It's a sense of recognition born of them being fragments of the same person and thus registering as the same person at first.
- Yuji doesn't have the obsessive attachment that Yuya does to Odd-Eyes. He's attached, but losing it won't make him break down.
- He does however have some of the same issues, just not as bad.
- He's still a performer, just not a clown.
